My Approach

I am a well experienced Registered Practitioner Member of BACP and Advanced Practitioner Member of Addiction Professionals. My private practice, Cognitive Counselling, offers individual counselling services on West Regent Street in Central Glasgow and online.

Cognitive Counselling provides various styles of therapy to treat different addiction and mental health related difficulties. The core of the techniques is a collaborative approach to discover what is contributing to the problems you are seeking help for and resolving them. An important aspect in being able to create change in ourselves, is the ability to acknowledge what needs to be changed.

My collaborative approach works on a similar basis to psychoeducation. This technique provides information related to the biology of the brain and the workings of the human mind. It is an evidence-based therapeutic intervention derived from my BSc in Psychology at the University of York, MSc in Neuroscience at King’s college London and MSc in Addiction Psychology and Counselling at London South Bank University. My style aims to teach a combination of awareness and problem-solving toward the routines that might be negatively affecting day-to-day life.

The humanistic and person-centred therapy I offer acknowledges any mental health or addiction difficulties you may be going through. A space is created where you can share your trauma and stress in your own individual circumstances, learn about why you are going through these experiences and how your life can be changed for the better. The knowledge I contribute to this collaborative process comes from my educational background in neuroscience, psychology, and addiction. I have also acquired notable expertise from working closely with clients in hospitals, as well as alcohol and narcotics recovery services. One of the most significant realisations I have taken away from my extensive training is the need for a belief in clients who are struggling to believe in themselves.

A more short-term version of my approach is facilitated through CBT, DBT, ACT, Mindfulness and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. These techniques focus on recognising the maladaptive thoughts and behaviours which may be perpetuating negative emotions. To find the appropriate solutions to complications you might be having in your life, the cause of the difficulties must be found first. Identifying these issues occurs by sharing how you feel your behaviours, thoughts, and emotions work. My contribution to this process is sharing my experience and knowledge of psychological and neuroscientific concepts to increase awareness of what some of the obstacles might be. Once these have been identified by shared contributions, the work on discovering solutions can begin.

While the approaches can be separated into the different labels mentioned above, something I strongly believe in is the fact that not one specific technique of therapy only can work for one client. The therapy I aim to offer combines various types of psychoanalysis together, tailored for your individual needs. From experience I have found it is essential for clients to share feedback on how they think their therapy sessions are going and what style works best for them. This is critical as the sessions are yours and I am here to support you.

It is also important to note that no matter how big or small you might perceive your issue; your difficulties do matter, and you deserve help.
