Therapeutic Approaches Used in My Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice

Different therapy approaches used to help you understand your experiences, build resilience, and move toward lasting change.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Focuses on current problems and rather than looking at their past causes, looks at what can currently be done to find solutions to these problems. Working together to find solutions to problems which may seem insurmountable.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT focuses on identifying and recognising problems in a person’s thoughts and behaviours which may lead to their difficulties. It focuses on not only what the maladaptive thoughts and behaviours are, but what is prolonging these problems.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is about accepting and committing to our negative experiences rather than trying to control and change them. It is a process of finding what we value in life and how to not get side-tracked in working toward those values.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about learning to live in the moment for what it is without questioning ourselves too much.

Often we find ourselves over-analysing ourselves and our situation, mindfulness can bring ourselves back to enjoying our reality.

12-Steps Based Intervention

A 12-step intervention is about recognizing the impact of addiction and committing to a structured path of recovery.

It is a process of acknowledging powerlessness over addiction, developing healthier coping strategies to maintain long-term change such as the belief in a higher power and eventually using your new found strength to make amends.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a proven therapy that helps your brain process trauma, anxiety, or those stuck painful memories. Think of it like speeding up your brain’s natural REM sleep processing—we use simple eye movements (or taps) to rewire them.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT teaches distress tolerance skills; the importance of radical acceptance and how emotional regulation can help manage emotions better for the long term.
