Understanding Trauma & PTSD
Trauma can affect how you think, feel, and experience the world in ways that aren’t always obvious at first.
Whether something happened recently or earlier in your life, its impact can show up as anxiety, low mood, difficulty trusting others, or a persistent sense of being on edge.
You might find yourself reacting in ways that don’t fully make sense to you or are struggling to switch off even when things feel they should be safe.
In therapy, we create a space where you can begin to understand these responses without judgement. Rather than seeing them as unfixable problems, we’ll make sense of them as maladaptively processed experiences.
This can be an important first step in reducing their intensity and impact. Eventually the trauma’s relevance to your life can be felt as insignificant.
How I can Help you
I take a structured but flexible approach, working at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you. Together, we’ll explore how your mind and body have adapted to past experiences, while building practical tools to help you manage overwhelming thoughts, emotions, and physical responses through grounding techniques.
Where appropriate, I integrate evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, which can help process difficult memories in a way that feels contained and highly effective in short space of time. Alongside this, we focus on strengthening stability and emotional regulation, through DBT so you feel more in control as the work progresses.
The aim isn’t to revisit everything at once, but to help you process what’s needed, when you’re ready, so you can move forward with greater clarity, stability, and a stronger sense of control over what has happened.
